2013 Review

2013 was an extremely disappointing season for our Club, probably one of the worst in recent times. Having been relegated to Division Two the previous season we lost several players which meant we started last season with a weakened and somewhat younger team.

However, under the Captaincy of Chris Sains we were still very optimistic of bouncing back and getting promoted. This unfortunately proved not to be as we finished mid table having lost several matches we were in a good position to win. Chris and Paul Murray were our leading run scorers with Marc Whitlock and our up and coming youngster Mark Jones taking most wickets.

The loss of players from our Club and lack of availability took its effect on our other teams as well; all of which had poor seasons. We realised it was going to be a challenge for our Seconds to remain in the Premier League and so it proved, as in most matches we were out classed. However, much credit must go to the regular players who gave their all throughout the season. Likewise our 3rd and 4th teams had similarly disappointing seasons, both, just avoiding relegation. Although our fifth team were, on most occasions out played at their level, there were some positive and encouraging signs with a number of young players making significant contributions.

The progress of our Youth Cricket was the highlight of our season. We continued to run our “Cricket for All” Programme for youngsters of 6 – 10 years, having now built an excellent relationship with many Junior Schools within the Havering area.

At the end of the season we looked afresh at all aspects of our Club and we are delighted to have Roy Smith as our first team Captain for next year. His enthusiasm, total commitment and undoubted talent will be a great asset to us all. Together with him and several others who will be joining us, and a few returning from the past, we can look forward to 2014 with real optimism.
